Courageous Convictions

2021 Courageous Convictions

Winemaking Notes

This wine is our homage to Vintage Port from the Douro Valley. Made using traditional methods using traditional grape varieties, the wine exhibits a beautiful balance between the high, grippy tannins, high acidity, exquisite fruit concentration and fruit intensity, the high 20% alcohol and the 100 g/L residual sugar.  Richly fruited, powerful, elegant, and complex with a persistent finish comprising refreshing acidity that acts as ballast to the enticingly sweet expression. If enjoying now, a decant is suggested. Properly cellared, this wine will gracefully evolve for 20+ years and should reach maturity in 10 years.

Technical Details

After destemming the classic Port grape varieties (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cão, Souzão), the grapes are foot-treaded and punch down to achieve maximum but gentle extraction. 100% native fermentation. The primary fermentation is arrested using 77% alcohol neutral spirit, leaving 100 g/L residual sugar. The wine is aged in neutral French oak for 18 months. The alcohol is 20%, pH is 3.78, and the titratable acidity is 5.7 g/L.

Reviews

98 Points - Brothers Pinto and Billo Naravane are unabashedly infatuated with vintage Port and for years they wanted to make a Washington Port style wine using indigenous grapes. They now have met their match, as they utilize Touriga Nacional. Tinta Roriz, Tinta Cao and Souzao grapes that were sourced from the Yakima Valley. The nose is incredible expressive, showing Asian spices alongside sandalwood, huckleberry compote, Turkish coffee and suggestions of eucalyptus. The palate is soft and seamless with incredible verve, texture and weight. Milk chocolate, toffee, creme de violette, tar, anise flavors all collide, with nuances of damp soils, pencil lead and Mandarin orange peel. In terms of flavor complexity, this is pretty hard to top. Hedonistic, yet showing loads of mouth-watering acidity, this is 2021 actually considerably better than the 2020 version and retains its honor as the finest Port-style wine ever made in Washington State. Grab your Cohiba and dig in! Drink 2023-2040. Owen Bargreen
